Championship Rings: Bling for Men?

Where did this idea originate, you ask?  According to legend, some scorned football widow  sarcastically commented to her husband (probably an NFL commissioner), that "You should have just married football, you rotten $#!$^&**, for all the time you spend on it!"  And so, after the bitter divorce, a tradition was born...

Where, exactly, does one wear one of these things?  I don't recall ever seeing anyone but allegedly-former-greats-who-now-sportscast wearing the things.  I mean, is Matt Leinart wearing one to class everyday?  Did Johnny Damon wear his to the Yankee contract signing?  Are there formal championship ring wearing etiquette rules?  Shouldn't there be?

Do the rings serve a useful purpose other than to pick up women in bars?  As big as they are, they should be natural conversation starters.

Judging by the various 61 rings for sale on ebay, winners are not so attached to these trinkets that one cannot be had at a price (maybe they don't work for bar pick-ups after all).  The ballpark is between $1-$30,000 depending on what you want to buy, or maybe who you want to pick-up...

So why, exactly, are we giving macho athletes rings?
